In order to be able to fully access Remote Desktop Services 2012, a valid server license as well as a corresponding client access license (CAL) - either per user or per end device - is required. To this end, Remote Desktop Services 2012 provides a number of extensions to the existing Terminal Services, such as TS RemoteApp for managing server applications and TS Web Access for access via the Internet, which is secured via the TS Gateway. These are a component of Windows Server that enables users to access Windows and graphical desktops remotely without the need for additional software such as Citrix. Known as Terminal Services in Windows Server 2008 and earlier versions, the release of the previous version of Windows Server 2012 and R2 has resulted in the name Remote Desktop Services introduced.
